SKI RESORTS
Skiing has had a place in Colorado since gold was discovered in the Rocky Mountains west of Denver in 1859. Snowshoes, used by Indians and trappers to travel on the plains of Eastern Colorado, would not support a man on the light, fluffy snow that was encountered in the mountains. Miners, mail carriers and traders needing to travel road less mountain terrain turned to Norwegian snow shoes (skis) to get around in winter. Ski clubs would later be formed in mining towns to provide sport and entertainment during the long winter months. A great boost to skiing in Colorado came about during WWII when Camp Hale was built near Leadville, Colorado to train the 10th Mountain Division. Many of the men who served in that division came back to Colorado after the war and worked to build the great ski resorts that bless Colorado today.
The major ski resorts within 100 miles driving distance of Denver are listed here along with the web addresses you can use to check out the resorts for lift ticket prices, lodging, ski conditions and amenities.
